Conference hall

The conference hall in the House of Literature is a historic aula. This is the only interior in Warsaw and unique in Poland which retained an integral art deco style, with its original layout of the amphitheatrical auditorium, lighting and wooden decor elements of the house and stage. This is the work of Wanda Telakowska, an outstanding Polish designer and a founder of the Polish Industrial Design Institute, and of her team, completed in 1948. Telekowska’s close friendship relations with many writers, including Iwaszkiewicz, Słonimski or Irena Krzywicka, added an individual touch to the design. The hall, hosting up to 180 people, for years has been the venue for literary meetings and festivals, public assemblies, science conferences, educational sessions, etc. This was the place where important events of post-war literary life took place, e.g jubilees of Polish writers (including Maria Dąbrowska or Władysław Broniewski). In the last several decades the hall hosted the most distinguished figures of the Polish culture as well as prominent representatives of other countries’ literature, such as Umberto Eco, Gunter Grass, Amos Oz or Charles Simic. The greatest Polish poets, prosaists and dramatists, essayists, publicists and thinkers, the people of art, theatre and films – they all have been here. It also has been the venue of meetings with the people of politics and hosted the heads of states and cities: kings and queens, presidents and prime ministers as well as mayors. Today the hall holds literary and educational events, author’s meetings, lectures, conferences, etc. The hall can be rented for meetings, conferences or educational events as well as for meetings accompanying a cocktail party or a banquet. It holds up to 180 people, is accessible to the disabled and has audiovisual facilities available.
